Why do we raise Grass Fed Beef?

Beef. A food that can be controversial, especially since feed lots, grain feeding, and then grocery stores are assumed by many to be the only means of meat production and distribution. No wonder beef can be deemed irresponsible eating.

There have even been moments we've stopped to wonder if we should toss in the towel on livestock and just raise crops or veggies.

Then we look around at our mostly sloping farm with marginal soils and laugh - this is NO land for tillage. What little soil we have would be down the creek with the first torrential rain (something we get more of these days, have ya noticed?).

What's more, crops can use a lot of fossil fuels by the time all the tilling, seeding, cultivating, harvesting, storage, and transport are factored into the costs of production. Also, large-scale vegetable operations require a lot of people power to tend, harvest, and pack the produce. We don’t have a lot of people power available to us.

As it stands, our farm, with its small labor force and un-croppable topography can put much more food and nutrients into the world by teaming up with cattle and sheep to harvest what wants to grow here already - grasses and brush - cellulose.

It might be a different story if we had a different farm but we don't. Instead, we listen to the land when it tells us what it can and can't do.

Zooming out, this means there is never going to be one over-arching dietary or agricultural recommendation that is going to be a fit for every place on this planet.

In some places, meat IS a responsible choice and we find ourselves in one of those places.

2024 Quarter, Half, or Whole Beef Shares
Buying beef in bulk saves money and time

  • When you buy beef in bulk, you don't have to worry about grocery store price increases because your price is already locked in. You get everything from high end steaks to delicious roasts for about the same price per pound as our ground beef.

  • Instead of running out to the store when you need meat, you can run to your freezer to shop. Kinda convenient, eh?

  • The variety of cuts gives you a ton of options to work with whatever else is already in the pantry or fridge.

    Here’s how it works:

  1. Decide what size Share (quarter, half, whole) you need and which month you want your beef to be ready (Sept through December).

  2. Reserve your Share by placing a deposit. We use your deposit to care for the herd all season. Thanks for your help with that part!

  3. Fill out the short form we provide to select your desired cuts (we're happy to help if needed).

  4. Wait for fall when we will transport your beef to the processor for you.

  5. Once your share is processed and ready, we will invoice you for the balance and the processing fee.

  6. Fill up your freezer. We can either deliver your Share for a small fee or you are welcome to visit the farm and pick it up. (We are always happy to schedule a little farm tour at the same time!)

You'll be stocking your household with plenty of nutritious, delicious beef to last a long time while contributing to the health of your community by supporting farmers and helping them care for their land and animals well.
